That’s how long the 33 Chilean miners were stuck underground. Honestly, my mind can’t even comprehend that. I know when faced with such an extreme situation, the human body and mind can amaze you. However, I think I would have gone crazy. Just thinking about it makes my head go claustrophobic, and you can bet I would be having panic attacks.
I’m not sure you could watch the rescues without being moved (unless you have no heart). I had heard the story some but hadn’t paid much attention until the last couple of days, but I became enthralled. Being an engineer (well in-training) the mechanics and the technology are enough to amaze me. But watching the reunions made me smile and cry all at the same time. I almost felt bad watching those first few precious moments between a husband and wife or father and child, but it was such pure joy that I couldn’t look away.
I heard a debate on a radio show this morning about whether or not these men would be considered heroes. Maybe they aren’t heroes in the same way we would look at the firemen who rushed into the Twin Towers on 9/11, but they I believe they saved each other’s lives and that is pretty heroic. They brought together a nation and in some ways the world, and I think you have to be moved by their will to live and survive. I know it will be interesting to hear the accounts of what happened in those 69 days as time goes by, but right now, all I can say is PRAISE THE LORD!!! GOD IS GOOD – all of the miners are out!
